As an Adult, It’s Like Being a Kid All Over Again: The Arizona Lifestyle Surprise
When people think about moving to Arizona, they usually think about one thing first: the heat.
What they don’t expect is how much their lifestyle can change.
I’ve lived in Arizona since 2009, and recently I started asking people who relocated here what surprised them most after making the move. Their answers weren’t what I expected.
One friend who moved from Washington summed it up perfectly:
“As an adult, it’s like being a kid all over again.”
At first, I laughed. Then she explained.
Back in Washington, much of social life revolved around being indoors. The weather often dictated what people could do and when they could do it. After moving to Arizona, she found herself getting invitations to pool parties, pickleball games, outdoor concerts, patio dinners, and neighborhood gatherings.
Her reaction?
“Wait… people really do this?”
The answer is yes.
Arizona’s sunshine and mild winters make it possible to spend much of the year outside. Instead of waiting for a few perfect weekends each summer, many residents enjoy outdoor activities year-round.
Another thing she noticed was the sense of community that comes from living outside. Neighbors meet while walking, golfing, swimming, exercising, and participating in community events. It creates opportunities for connection that many people don’t realize they’re missing until they experience it.
Of course, Arizona isn’t perfect. The summers are hot, and anyone considering a move should understand what that means. But many transplants tell me they’d rather deal with a few months of heat than months of snow, rain, or gray skies.
For many people, Arizona isn’t just a change of address. It’s a lifestyle change.
And that’s why I always encourage relocation clients to think beyond the house itself.
Before deciding where to live, ask yourself:
How do I want to spend my days?
Do I want golf nearby? Walking trails? Pickleball? Restaurants? Community events? A quieter pace of life?
The answers to those questions often determine the best neighborhood far more than the number of bedrooms or square footage.
Arizona is a big place with many different lifestyles available. Finding the right fit starts with understanding what matters most to you.
And who knows? You may discover, just like my friend did, that as an adult, it’s possible to feel like a kid all over again.
