Where Do You Belong?

by Heidi Hills

People think they're choosing a state, a city, or a neighborhood.

What they're really choosing is the answer to the question, "Where do I belong?"

I've spent a lot of time talking with people who are considering a move to Arizona. They compare cities, research neighborhoods, study home prices, and ask about schools, restaurants, golf courses, and commute times.

Those are all important questions.

But after years of moving around the country myself, I've come to believe that most people aren't really searching for a house.

They're searching for a place that feels like home.

And surprisingly, those aren't always the same thing.

Years ago, I lived in a beautiful home on the Strand in Manhattan Beach, California. From the outside, it looked like I had everything. The beach was right outside my back door. I was surrounded by successful people. I lived in one of the most desirable places in the country.

And yet, I felt like I was standing on the outside of my own life looking in.

I had a house.

What I didn't have was a sense of belonging.

I watched people who seemed deeply connected to their communities and friendships, and I couldn't quite figure out why I felt so disconnected. It wasn't the city. It wasn't the beach. It wasn't even the people.

I simply hadn't found my place yet.

Years later, I moved to Arizona.

At first, I thought Arizona would simply be another stop along the journey. I met wonderful people, including my best friend Al, but I still wasn't sure where life was taking me.

Then I met Chris.

And this is where the story changes.

When people talk about finding home, they often talk about a house, a neighborhood, or a city. For me, home wasn't a place. It was a person.

Chris felt like home.

There was something about who we became together that changed everything. We built a life, created friendships, invested in our future, and surrounded ourselves with people who challenged us, supported us, and celebrated life alongside us.

Arizona didn't become home because of a ZIP code.

Arizona became home because of the life we built here.

That's why I often encourage people to think differently when they're relocating.

Instead of asking:

"What city should I live in?"

Ask:

"Where do I belong?"

Maybe your answer is a golf community where you'll play three times a week and know your neighbors by name.

Maybe it's a family-focused neighborhood with parks, schools, and community events.

Maybe it's a place close to hiking trails, pickleball courts, coffee shops, or grandkids.

Maybe it's somewhere you've never even considered.

The truth is that every city in the Valley has multiple personalities. Scottsdale is not just Scottsdale. Gilbert is not just Gilbert. Surprise is not just Surprise. Even within the same city, one neighborhood can feel completely different from another.

That's why the best relocation decisions aren't made by choosing a city.

They're made by finding your people, your pace, your activities, and your community.

In other words, finding where you belong.

When I talk to clients who truly love where they live, they rarely start by talking about their house.

They talk about their neighbors.

Their friends.

Their routines.

The activities they enjoy.

The life they've built.

Because long after the moving boxes are unpacked, your life happens outside the walls of your home.

Today, when people ask me why I love Arizona, I usually talk about the sunshine, the lifestyle, and the people.

But the truth is simpler than that.

This is where I belong.

And I know I've found where I belong because I no longer dream about moving somewhere else.

I dream about vacationing.

And then coming home.
